“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”
Introduction
I bought this book for my own Christmas gift but never touch it ever since. Until, last week I had a sudden epiphany that pushes me to read this book. The storyline is simple and short so I thought it might help me with my reading slump.
It's about a shepherd boy who's on a quest for a treasure in Egypt. Though it's a simple fable about chasing our dreams, The Alchemist will give you some life lesson for young people like me.
The book has 3 parts and it opens with the story of Narcissus but with its plot a little bit changed. Then, the rest of 2 parts is about Santiago and his treasure hunt. In part one it describes Santiago's doubt on which decision he should make, whether to chase his dream or to live his peaceful monotone life. While part two is telling Santiago's life after the decision he made.
Review
The Alchemist remind me of things that I'm too scared to admit. Since I was a child I had always dreamed to study abroad, but I always thought that I'm not capable enough to achieve such dream. But, after closing this book I believe that every human is capable to achieve their dreams if they believe of themselves and also through hard working. Knowing where to place our heart is also a main point to know where to find our dreams. But, the greatest of all things is not about the treasure that we finally got but the journey that has taught us dozens of lesson.
Besides talking about pursuing dreams or taking chances, The Alchemist also reminds us to slow down for a moment, just like what the glass seller said, Maktub, it is written. Everyone has a treasure that awaits them because everything has been written since the beginning, but never be too focused only on one thing. Yes, dreams were made to be achieved but life was given to be enjoyed.
Another element of the book that I really love is that, there are some fact about pluralism in the world. In part one, it is described that Santiago is a Catholic, later when he arrived in Africa, he worked and lived with a glass seller who is a Moslem. It is interesting because in the foreword Coelho said, ' Even we might be different, we are united by the stories we carried'. The story of Santiago fascinate the glass seller and made him to trust him, this is what we called as The Universal Language and love is the universal language. It might sounds cliché but when we love another, we will respect them too. But, love is a strong word. We can love another person when we humbled ourself first. We humbled ourself when we listen to another person.
I always believe that each of us are precious and have the capability to affect another man's life. So, whatever you do, do it well, not only for the life of ourself but also for the others too.
“No matter what he does, every person on earth plays a central role in the history of the world. And normally he doesn't know it.”
Conclusion
In the end, we know that our life is in control of Someone who is far greater than us. Remember that even your darkest time will produce the brightest stars. It is part of the journey and it's not the end, as long as you never stop trying and believing, But, life it's not only based on a dream or 'if we don't achieve our dream we won't be happy', NO, it's not like that.
Happiness is achieved when someone can enjoy every little bit of life. Every little thing in life can brought happiness, like maybe the smell of coffee, the sound of music, the smile on someone's face when we make a joke, or even the feeling you got when you finally opened a package you've been waiting for so long. Everything can be your source of happiness and the first thing you need to do is, look at the right direction and with the eye of the heart.
Believe in yourself and know that you are capable of anything; your dreams, your future, and your happiness too. Find your own treasure.
“Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure.”
